Filter clogging continually!

My dishwasher is driving me crazy. I have four children and admittedly some are better than others at scraping gunk off of the dishes. However is seems that at least every two weeks we have to dig into the machine and manually clean the filter (grinder?) for the dishes to get clean. Otherwise it's as if the load wasn't even done. The soap will be seen on the top of the dishes. This unit is only about 4 years old. Do I need to replace it? I can't guarantee my children would be any better with another model, but I might be able to find a model with either better grinding or an easier filter to c
